Mark 7:37. And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.
In the Gospel of Mark, the last part of chapter 7 is documented the healing of the person who was deaf and had a speech impediment. In this passage a group of people brought a deaf and mute man to Jesus so that he could be healed. Jesus took the man away from the multitude, put His fingers in the man’s ears, spit, and then touched the tongue of the man and said Ephatha – which means “be opened”, and the man was able to hear and speak clearly.
The man could not hear and because of this he was was unable to speak clearly.
The church of the Lord Jesus Christ is also suffering from the same condition as was this man. Ezekiel 12:2 “Son of man, you are living among a rebellious people. They have eyes to see but do not see and ears to hear but do not hear, for they are a rebellious people”. The church is deaf and mute. The church cannot hear the word of the Lord. It is as it was in the days of Eli. Why? Because there was no holiness, not righteousness, no integrity, no purity and all this within the house of the Lord in Shiloh and in the house of Eli the high priest. And so it is now. There is no holiness. Worldliness has crept in. We are in touch with and hear everything that goes on in the world –the politics, society pages, the charities, the niceties, the diplomacies of the world. Worldliness has made us deaf to the voice of the Lord. We need to separate ourselves from the world and get close to Jesus. You see, the greater the problem the closer we need to get to Jesus. We need to separate from the world. We need to spend time alone with Jesus. He is the only one who will remove the disease. He is the only one who can open our ears and restore to us the ability to hear.
The Church is called to be a witness and yet is unable to speak clearly. She cannot speak because she cannot hear. In Acts 2, Jesus tells His disciples after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you, you will receive power and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and to the uttermost parts of the world. We need to hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church to be able proclaim it to the world. We need to come to the Lord and humble ourselves and seek His Face, and turn from our sins, He will surely forgive us and heal us.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14
